All pupils admitted to the Sullivan Centre Medical Hospital Education Service have a core curriculum offer which supports the development of basic skills in: reading, writing and maths. These key skills are delivered in conjunction with opportunities to encourage progress in pupils’ personal, emotional and social development e.g. working as a team, travelling independently and developing key life skills.
Through our curriculum offer, we aim to:
• offer opportunities to acquire and develop key skills according to individual need;
• promote spiritual, moral, social and cultural, as well as both academic and physical development;
• offer the opportunity to gain accreditation matched to ability;
• prepare pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life.
Many pupils referred to the Sullivan Centre arrive part way through the academic year and may have missed substantial periods of school. Our aim therefore, is to work with each pupil to identify their priority needs in terms of learning and social development. We will provide a bespoke package which best meets these needs and builds upon prior achievement.
On initial referral, all pupils are assessed to determine their academic ability as well as their social, emotional and transition needs. Where appropriate at Key Stage 4, pupils follow accredited courses in: English and Maths and have the opportunity to participate in work related learning.
A range of additional options are available for those pupils able to access a wider provision. Some pupils have a reduced academic offer, with a greater focus on personal and social development needs.
